How to Read Your Electric Bill
Philippine electricity bills from distribution utilities like Meralco list several charge components. The biggest is typically the generation charge, which represents the cost of electricity from power plants — roughly 44% of your bill. This is followed by the distribution charge(29%), the utility's fee for delivering power to your home.
Your kWh consumption is measured monthly by your meter and billed at the prevailing blended rate for your area. Lifeline consumers (those using less than 100 kWh/month) may qualify for subsidized rates under the Lifeline Rate program.
Sample Electricity Bill Computation
Consumption: 200 kWh (typical 2-bedroom apartment)
Meralco rate: ₱12.56/kWh
Total Bill: 200 × ₱12.56 = ₱2,512
Breakdown: Generation ₱1,105 + Distribution ₱729 + Transmission ₱176 + System Loss ₱126 + Taxes ₱377
Daily Cost: ₱2,512 ÷ 30 = ≈ ₱83.73/day
Tips to Lower Your Electricity Bill
- Switch to inverter air conditioners — up to 40% more efficient than non-inverter units.
- Replace incandescent and fluorescent bulbs with LED lights.
- Unplug standby appliances — phantom loads can add 5–10% to your bill.
- Clean AC filters monthly — dirty filters increase energy consumption by 15–20%.

How to reconcile this estimate with your bill
The fastest way to make this calculator match your household is to use your own effective rate: divide the latest total bill by total kWh consumed. This blended rate captures the pass-through charges and taxes for that month better than using a generic Meralco headline rate.
If the estimate still differs, compare billing days first. A 34-day bill will naturally look higher than a 29-day bill even when daily usage is stable. Then check whether your bill includes arrears, deposits, installment adjustments, or lifeline-rate treatment.
When this tool is most useful
Use it before buying an appliance, moving to a new rental, or setting a family budget. For example, testing an added 80 kWh per month at your current blended rate gives a clearer picture of an air-conditioner upgrade than looking only at the appliance sticker price.
